A Favorite LUYA Product - Styling Paste

Posted by Carlos Barksdale on

I’ve had waves for as long as I can remember. According to my Grandma, the morning of my birth the doctor pulled me out by the tail of my durag. I don’t know how true that is, but I can remember the countless hours of my life that my mom spent brushing my hair. When I was kid, I would kneel between her knees as she sat on the toilet, grabbed my face in her palm, and relentlessly brushed. Y’all, I’m telling you, my momma had an arm on her! And sometimes her thighs would squeeze me so tight that I might as well have been wearing a corset. Good times!

During this process, she would apply pomade to my hair before putting on my durag. We actually called it 'wave grease' and a 'wave cap' - but that’s another story.

Needless to say, I grew up applying the pomades that we grew up on - 360 Style, Sportin’ Waves, Dudley’s, and of course - Murray’s.

As I started my journey towards using healthier grooming products, I quickly abandoned the pomades of old. As the saying goes, “If you knew better, you’d do better.” Well, it was hard to do better, because I couldn’t find a pomade that was healthy and would give me the look and feel that I wanted my waves to have.

I started applying coconut oil and shea butter as alternatives and they would pacify me depending on the length of my hair, but nothing quite had the consistency that I was looking for.

Then one day, the founder of my brand partner, Trinity Hills, called me and said that he had developed a hair styling paste pomade. “I think you’re going to love this Los. I’ve been getting great reviews.”

“Say no more,” I said. “Send it to me!”

My first reaction upon opening it was wow!

First of all, it has a great citrus smell that’s not overbearing, and the paste is light to the touch. Unlike other pomades, I don’t feel like I’m working out when I rub it in my hands, and it’s not caked on. My scalp can breathe, and if I need a thicker consistency, I can just apply more. It's a unique blend that allows me to control the thickness and variation - light or heavy application. More importantly, it makes my hair look good! It doesn’t give my waves a grey shadow but rather illuminates the black undertones of my hair.

The best thing is that it contains the healthy ingredients that I know are beneficial - aloe vera, shea butter, avocado oil, vitamin E,  etc. These are ingredients proven to promote healthy hair growth and scalp treatment. Adding the Styling Paste to my regimen has truly changed the game for me, and I hope it will for you too. You’ll never look back.
